A free Shred Identity Theft program will be held on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at L.C. Bird High School, 10301 Courthouse Road.

Citizens may bring up to two boxes (no larger than 10 inches by 13 inches by 18 inches) or three paper grocery bags of personal documents to be shred on site in the Shred-it™ document destruction truck.

Shred Identity Theft is a metro-wide crime prevention campaign developed by the Central Virginia Crime Prevention Association in collaboration with metro-Richmond law enforcement agencies and Shred-it™, a nationwide document destruction company.

Identity theft is a growing problem, so police urge citizens to clean out personal documents that need to be disposed of and bring them to this shredding event. Identity theft can wreak havoc in a person’s life by ruining a person’s credit or wiping out entire bank accounts, and it can take months or even years to clear one’s name and financial records. Prevention and awareness are two crime-fighting tools that can help deter identity thieves.

Stay Current with School- There's An App For That
Chesterfield County School Mobile App is the Best Way to Stay Current
A brand-new mobile web app makes it easier than ever to stay current with Chesterfield County Public Schools. Developed in-house by the school system’s graphic design/web specialist, this free app for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices provides a news feed, calendar and phone numbers.

Information at mychesterfieldschools.com tells users of iPhones, iPads, Droids and Blackberries how to add the app icon to their devices.

The mobile web app is another online innovation by Chesterfield County Public Schools, which during this school year has changed its website address, redesigned its online presence and launched an e-newsletter for the community. The new address for the school system’s website is mychesterfieldschools.com, which replaced the previous URL of chesterfield.k12.va.us.

In addition to featuring feeds from the school system’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, the redesigned website lets visitors subscribe to an RSS feed so they are notified of updates. The website works in all browsers but works best in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera.

School Notes, the community e-newsletter, is published once or twice a month. Community members who are not already receiving School Notes can sign up by going to mychesterfieldschools.com and clicking “Join our mailing list” in the top right corner of the screen.

Here are some of the additional ways the school system communicates: Information is available at www.facebook.com/chesterfieldschools and www.twitter.com/ccpsinfo. School Board meetings are shown live on Comcast Channel 17 and Verizon Channel 27, and the school system has an educational TV channel on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon Channel 26. Chesterfield County Public Schools provides information to local TV, print and radio media outlets.

It's our chance to say thank you to the hundreds of thousands of troops who've served in Iraq, now coming home. A huge Welcome Home Parade will march to Byrd Park this weekend.

The patriotic event is set for Saturday, May 19th, Armed Forces Day. The parade will begin at the intersection of Boulevard and Kensington at 10 a.m., and will run to the Carillon at Byrd Park.

There will also be a veterans resource village at the Carillon where troops can get all kinds of information on services available to them. A free outdoor concert will also follow the parade.

However, the main mission to be accomplished is a show of gratitude, for an incredible sacrifice in a war that lasted nearly ten years.

Bugs - Bug Off!
Warmer weather brings out the birds and the bees—and all sorts of other bugs.
Summertime pests are not only a nuisance; they can also carry and transmit harmful diseases. How can you get these bugs to buzz off?

  • If you are stung by a wasp or a bee, carefully remove the stinger if you can see it. Then squeeze the area that was stung to get out any venom, wash with soap and water, and treat with an antibiotic ointment. Ice it down if there is any swelling.
  • Use a repellent with DEET to protect against mosquito bites. Caution: Do not use products containing DEET on children under the age of two months; and us only sparingly on kids.
  • If you are entering an area with lots of mosquitoes, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Tuck the bottom of your pant legs into your socks.
